Scout Site primitive campsite at Dismals Canyon
See
their website here. This
should be a fun camping trip for boys. There's an easy 1.5 mile hike
through the canyon, on which to take a guided tour at night to see the
"Dismalites". These are glowworms that are unique to only a few places
on Earth, including Dismals Canyon and New Zealand. Swimming is also
available in the canyon during the summer.
Hiking on Rainbow Mountain: Info and maps here.
